The Massachusettes Senate Race

It is not often that we get the opportunity to see such raw power being held hostage by the will of the people of one state.  No matter how you feel about "health care reform", the race in Massachusettes gives voters of one state the chance to drastcally effect the lives of every American for generations to come.

Tyranny of the Majority
As a college student, I took a civics class that outlined some of the enlightenment thinking of those who founded the American experiment.  They had lived through the tyrannical days of Kings who dictated the very freedoms and liberties that could be granted to the little people.  In my mind, one of the greatest contributions of the founding of America was the idea that all men are equal,  A king may proclaim divinely inspired appointment and therefore vastly superior ability to know what is best for his subjects; but the founders said otherwise.

The principle that man can strive to obtain the greatest in personal freedom and benefit within a context where such striving will also benefit the greater society places a lot of faith in the goodness, intelligence, and generosity of every man.  This foundation is the crux of granting to all of us who call America our home the right to pursue our lives, liberties, and happiness without the constant "nurturing and protection" of a divine sovereign who knows what is best for us.  The opportunity to succeed is far greater than that in any other country on earth.  But the opportunity to fail is just as real.  It is the consequences of such failure that gives power to those who would seek to reinstate that divine sovereignty, only now it is not through a single individual (would that ever fly in America?), but through the collective "wisdom" of those endowed with greater intelligence and understanding than the rest of us.

The threat of pure democracy and majority rule was dealt with through the comprimises that led to the adoption of a republic rather than a pure democracy.  Pure democracy would lead to a tyranny by the majority that would trample the rights of minorities.  The last year of uninterrupted marching towards the reinstatement of a system of rule by the elite who will shelter us from our own unwise use of our liberty is a demonstration of the unchecked power of tyranny that will soon subject us all to a monarchial rule by the all-wise 330+ democratic members of congress.  Think of that, a majority of representative from several states will forever change the lives of 300 million plus Americans and our posterity because some need to be sheltered from the consequences of their life choices.

Our Only Hope
Should the Massachusettes senate race turn out with a reduction of one senate seat from the ranks of the tryannical progressives, freedom might yet endure.  If not, we will be looking at a future where we will be brought ever more in bondage to the great leaders who must care for all of us so that no one suffers.  Suffering is a part of the human condition.  But so is charity and generosity.  We are moving to a cuture where our government feels it better for me to pay someone else to take care of my family and neighbors in need, rather than using my own talents, energy, and resources to care for them myself.  This not only costs more and delivers fewer benefits, but it also cheapens and damages the unifying power of love and community that have been one of the greatest parts of being an American.  The only reasons for this preference on the part of our "leaders" appears to be that they do not feel that I will do what needs to be done"right", or that they will procure more power for themselves as the only source to which the unfortunate can turn for aid.

I will care for my family and friends!  It is the calling of each of us to serve and help our fellowmen.  If only the government would leave us the resources to do so.  I plead with God that we might find a re-birth of freedom where my voice might be heard.
